National League vs. American League

Tuesday, July 16, 2024 – 08:00 PM ET at Globe Life Field

National League Roster

The National League starting lineups have been released.

They’ll start with Paul Skenes as the pitcher, and the lineup is as follows.

  • Ketel Marte – 2B
  • Shohei Ohtani – DH
  • Trea Turner – SS
  • Bryce Harper – 1B
  • William Contreras – C
  • Christian Yelich – RF
  • Alec Bohm – 3B
  • Teoscar Hernandez – CF
  • Jurickson Profar LF

This lineup won’t last the entire game. The National League still has plenty of bench players who will get into the game in the later portion. In addition, Skenes will only throw one inning, allowing eight other pitchers to log playing time on the mound in this game.

American League Roster

On the American League side, they’ll pitch Corbin Burnes.

Meanwhile, the AL lineup consists of the following:

  • Steven Kwan – LF
  • Gunnar Henderson – SS
  • Juan Soto – RF
  • Aaron Judge – CF
  • Yordan Alvarez – DH
  • Jose Ramirez – 3B
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. – 1B
  • Adley Rutschman – C
  • Marcus Semien – 2B

Again, like the National League, these batters might see two at-bats and then give up their spots to others on the bench looking for some reps.

Recent Trends & History

It’s hard to predict an All-Star Game. We don’t know which pitchers will get an opportunity on the mound or when they’ll see their names called. We can only look at the first-inning analytics to understand how the first inning will play out.

But that doesn’t help much, knowing nine innings are in a baseball game. That said, trends from other years certainly help.

The National League won in 2023, 3-2, but the American League has won in nine of the last ten games. In addition, nine of the previous 13 games have gone Under 7.5 runs.

Typically, the American League wins, and the total goes Under.

The Deeper Team

The American League is deeper, especially in the starting lineup. They’re filled with lefty batters going up against Paul Skenes in the first inning.

That’s big because Skenes hasn’t been as good against lefties as righties lately. Skenes has walked 11.1% of his last 63 lefties this season. He’s also allowed 28.2% of fly balls and has had multiple games where he’s allowed a first-inning home run this year.

Additionally, Skenes has allowed a 10.3% barrel percentage to his last 63 lefties and has only added 9.8% of swinging strikes. He’ll be in line to face three lefties to begin the game. That favors the American League.

If the AL can get an early lead, that’ll certainly help.

What About Corbin Burnes?

While Corbin Burnes has a better matchup, he doesn’t have it easy, either.

Over the last 30 days, Burnes has allowed a .246 ISO and wOBA of .336 to his previous 68 righties. He’ll be in line to at least face Trea Turner third in the batting order.

He’d also potentially see former teammate William Contreras, a righty batting fifth for the Brewers.

Burnes is also not a strikeout threat. There will likely be balls in play from the National League early. Burnes has struck out only 21.4% of batters over the last month.

MLB Computer Pick

Ultimately, it’s anyone’s guess who will pitch the rest of the innings for both sides. It’s also unclear when both sides will make positional changes to their squads.

But based on the first inning, we’ll likely see a run or two in the first inning. The American League also has a better chance at starting up a rally in the first against a rookie pitcher like Skenes.

Therefore, I suggest backing the American League and the Over at +100 MLB odds in tonight’s All-Star Game.
