It’s Week 6 in the CFL and OddsTrader takes a look at two games on Saturday: the Roughriders vs. Argonauts and the Redblacks vs. Tiger-Cats.
Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Toronto Argonauts
Saturday, July 16, 2022 – 02:00 PM EDT at Raymond Field
Spread: Roughriders -1.5 (-110)
Total: Over/Under 43.5 (-110)
Can Toronto Pick Themselves Back Up?
It was a cruel defeat for Toronto Argonauts against the Grey Cup holders, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers two weeks ago. With their backs to the wall and facing a first-quarter deficit of 0-14, the Argonauts came roaring back to within a game-tying conversion with less than 30 seconds remaining.
- Quarterback, McLeod Bethel-Thompson refused to blame it on the one kick, instead insisting that, “a whole lot of points were missed than just on missed kicks”.
- Argos’ new signing at running back, Andrew Harris helped himself to 111 rushing yards and said about his old team, “that’s the best team in the league, unfortunately, we lost, but we got some positives once we started playing”.
- Wide-receiver Brandon Banks was again in good form with a 45-yard touchdown grab.
- Argos head coach insisted his young side needed to grow up and find better ways of channeling their frustrations.
Will the Roughriders Start to Tire?
It’s been a strong start to the Saskatchewan Roughriders Grey Cup campaign as last week they knocked over the Ottawa Redblacks with little fuss.
- It was good to see the Roughriders put in an unusually clinical performance against the Redblacks last week. They often find ways of shooting themselves in the foot so that was a positive.
- Running backs Jamal Morrow and Frankie Hickson run the show for the offensive line, constantly pushing Ottawa back.
- Apart from Garrett Marino committing a last-quarter needless low-blow penalty, it was a much-improved effort from the Roughriders’ defense who only gave away 20 yards in penalties prior.
Roughriders vs. Argonauts Betting Picks
This week we have the peculiar dynamic of one team coming off a bye week having only played three times while the Roughriders go for a sixth straight week.
I really like the idea of supporting the Toronto Argonauts for that reason and because they’re at home. This, both on the spread and the moneyline for a more modest wager.

Ottawa Redblacks vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Saturday, July 16, 2022 – 05:00 PM EDT at Tim Hortons Field
Spread: Tiger-Cats -6.5 (-110)
Total: Over/Under 44 (-110)
Can Hamilton Find Some Bite?
It’s been a nightmare opening to the 2022 Grey Cup campaign for the Tiger-Cats. The chances of making a third successive final are starting to look very slim after their 25-29 loss to the Edmonton Elks two weeks ago after leading 16-6 in the opening quarter.
- The last home-field game was a heartbreaking loss for the Tiger-Cats, who conceded a late touchdown with 98 seconds to play when leading.
- Quarterback Dane Evans said that both home losses are on his shoulders giving away pivotal interceptions.
- Hamilton head coach, Orlando Steinauer said,” We’re not good enough now. We’re not executing at the level which needs to happen. We’re just not making those plays we need to make.
- The good news for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats is that last weekend they had a bye week giving them plenty of time to practice their execution.
Will Ottawa Win Their First CFL Game This Week?
Like Hamilton, it’s been a nightmare start to the Ottawa Redblacks Grey Cup campaign. This week something may give in Hamilton as both teams search for that elusive first win.
- It was a rough ride in Saskatchewan for the Redblacks who were resoundingly beaten 13-28.
- The Ottawa Redblacks felt rightly aggrieved by Garrett Marino’s horrible challenge on their quarterback, Jeremiah Masoli.
- There were no excuses made for their poor display and the challenge being so late and needless made no difference but it’s crucial Masoli recovers for the weeks ahead.
- The Redblacks did get after the Roughriders quarterback in the proper way with five sacks, but there were very few other positives from last weekend’s display.
Redblacks vs. Tiger-Cats Betting Pick
This week features a basement encounter between two sides bereft of confidence and desperate for a first CFL win of the season.
Let’s not forget the Tiger-Cats have been to the two previous Grey Cup finals and that must count for something on a week like this.
With home-field advantage, I am going to keep things simple and take the experienced Hamilton Tiger-Cats to prevail.
