Eubank Jr. vs. Benn Breakdown
Their fathers (Chris Eubank Sr. and Nigel Benn) delivered one of the most heated rivalries in boxing history. Now, decades later, the children of said legends will reignite a family feud in a middleweight clash that’s garnered worldwide attention.
With Benn jumping two weight classes, it’s no secret that Eubank will have the size. Not to mention, he’s also fought as high as super middleweight, and although it’s been five years since he returned to 160 lbs, he will edge this fight when it comes to dimensions.
Amongst boxing purists, Benn is known as the heavy hitter out of the two. That said, we haven’t witnessed him score a knockout win in three years, and with a whole new weight class to contend with, will that power translate against a much bigger and meaner opponent?
This Isn’t Nigel vs. Senior — It’s Something New
Based on the sheer size of him and the fact that he’s finished both Kamil Szeremeta and a revenge KO over Liam Smith in his previous two appearances, I am surprised that critics give Eubank Jr. no chance of scoring a knockout of his own here.
From a pound-for-pound standpoint, there’s no denying the fact that Benn hits harder.
His statistics, however, don’t give us much to go by, as none of them came in the middleweight division. We must also consider that Peter Dobson and Rodolfo Orozco have taken Benn the distance recently, and while ‘The Destroyer’ is a cool moniker, he hasn’t done much destroying in the ring of late.
Still, the common opinion of Eubank as the boxer and Benn as the puncher has significance.
Perception is everything, as with other aspects of this battle. Eubank ought to be the craftsman. Benn ought to be the wrecking machine. This battle ought to be every bit as classic as Nigel vs Senior. They ought to be their fathers. But, unfortunately, they are not.
Bet On the Eubank Moneyline
The available boxing odds are as expected, with Eubank Jr. coming in as a slight betting favorite, but not too wide of a margin due to his severe weight cut (no hydration clause) and age (35).
With everything considered, I still struggle to overlook Eubank as the victor, and this isn’t strictly based on him being the bigger man. Throughout their respective careers, Eubank Jr. has faced a significantly higher level of competition and succeeded in many of those contests. And yes, he isn’t the undefeated fighter this weekend, but all of his losses have come against former or current champions.
Benn hasn’t reached this level of the sport, which is completely fine; he’s seven years younger, after all. However, the added experience, should this fight come down to a chess game, Benn might just be playing checkers. It’s a momentous occasion with huge pressure on each man to protect the family name, and that’s why I believe a certain level of caution and defensive mindfulness will take this fight to the scorecards.
The winner? Well, if you haven’t already guessed, everything points to Eubank Jr., and with a respectable moneyline price available, it’s a simple straight wager for us this weekend.
