Pittsburgh vs. SMU

Saturday, November 02, 2024 – 08:00 PM ET at Gerald J. Ford Stadium

Pittsburgh’s Dominance Over Syracuse

Pittsburgh crushed Syracuse 41-13 on Thursday, achieving their first 7-0 start since 1982. The Panthers’ defense set the tone early, putting constant pressure on Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord and forcing interceptions on each of the Orange’s initial drives. Rasheem Biles and Kyle Louis each returned picks for touchdowns, while linebacker Brandon George snatched a tipped pass just before it hit the ground, displaying incredible reflexes.

The defensive onslaught continued as Braylan Lovelace added a third pick-six, making Pitt the first team since USC in 2022 to record three defensive touchdowns in one game. Despite limited field time, quarterback Eli Holstein managed 108 passing yards and two touchdowns before being pulled in the fourth quarter as a precaution following a hard hit.

Although Syracuse dominated the clock (41:12 to 18:48) and outpaced Pittsburgh in total yardage (327 to 223), McCord’s five interceptions were too much to overcome, as the Orange couldn’t prevent the Panthers from returning turnovers for scores.

On offense, Pittsburgh’s new coordinator Kade Bell continued pushing an uptempo approach, which had powered the team through their first five wins. Head coach Pat Narduzzi’s defense, a hallmark of his decade-long leadership, reasserted itself as a critical force for Pitt as they gear up for a potential ACC title run.

SMU’s Narrow Escape at Duke

On Saturday, SMU narrowly edged Duke in a 28-27 overtime victory, stopping a two-point conversion attempt to secure their fifth consecutive win. Brashard Smith led SMU’s rushing attack with 117 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime. Kevin Jennings contributed 299 total yards with both a rushing and passing score.

Despite a 6-0 advantage in turnovers, Duke couldn’t hold off SMU’s potent offense, which put up 469 total yards—the most allowed by Duke’s defense this season. SMU, rarely turnover-free, relied on offensive firepower and a decisive defensive stand to remain undefeated in conference play.

Keys to the Game

Pittsburgh’s defense, riding a wave of turnovers, has been the foundation of their perfect season. SMU, however, brings a dynamic offense that consistently posts high yardage. The outcome will hinge on how effectively Pitt’s defense can slow down SMU and whether the Mustangs can avoid the turnover pitfalls that have plagued their opponents.

Pittsburgh’s defense has been a nightmare for quarterbacks, forcing interceptions through relentless pressure. Meanwhile, SMU will look to continue their offensive momentum behind Smith’s rushing and Jennings’ dual-threat ability. Jennings’ skill in extending plays could challenge Pitt, but the Panthers’ opportunistic secondary will be on high alert to turn any mistake into points.

Smith has been SMU’s offensive centerpiece, consistently grinding out yards. But Pitt’s front seven has held firm against the run, limiting yardage and exerting pressure. If Pittsburgh can contain Smith and keep Jennings confined to the pocket, SMU may be forced into a more predictable approach, playing to the Panthers’ defensive strengths.

While Pittsburgh’s defensive reputation often overshadows their offense, Holstein has been efficient under Bell’s uptempo scheme, making quick, accurate throws and setting the pace. Though SMU has shown they can force stops, they’ve also been susceptible to fast-tempo drives. Holstein’s ability to orchestrate steady, short-yard drives could keep SMU’s offense off the field and control the game’s rhythm.

Turnovers have been a critical factor for both teams, and Pittsburgh’s defense has consistently capitalized on mistakes, often scoring off them. While SMU is comfortable in high-scoring games, Pitt’s knack for scoring on turnovers could become the deciding factor.

NCAAF Pick

Expect a defensive duel early on, with Pittsburgh leaning into efficient drives and SMU attempting to speed up the pace. Pittsburgh’s edge in forcing and capitalizing on turnovers could prove decisive, especially if they limit SMU’s big plays. While SMU will make their share of explosive plays, Pittsburgh’s defensive persistence should allow them to grind out a close victory.
