Will We See a Repeat of LVIII?

The Kansas City Chiefs have now won back-to-back Super Bowl titles after a 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. But what about next year? Could we see the same matchup or perhaps a pair of different challengers to the throne? Below we discuss the NFL futures odds on Super Bowl LIX.

Latest Super Bowl LIX Odds

There’s a long road between now and February 9, 2025, but the oddsmakers over at Caesars Sportsbook (check our Caesars Sportsbook Review) have already posted odds on Super Bowl LIX and here they are!

The Chiefs are currently co-favored to win the Super Bowl, at +550 along with the 49ers.

Both of these teams are attractive options. Forget that they were there last year and that teams often don’t make it to the Super Bowl twice in a row. It would anyhow be a mistake to dismiss these teams for the sake of expecting variety. They both met in the Super Bowl five years ago, as well, and the Chiefs have made it to two straight Super Bowls. So they can both make it again.

Historical Super Bowl Champions

Last year, the Chiefs won 25-22 in overtime against the 49ers. The Chiefs leaned on the heroism of Patrick Mahomes and on the high quality of its defense, which had so often carried the team while its lack of quality wide receivers diminished its scoring potential.

In 2023, Kansas City beat Philadelphia 38-35. This year, Kansas City’s offense was more potent than it was in 2024. The Chiefs relied, per usual, on Mahomes, who was his usual efficient and effective self. But Kadarius Toney was also a much stronger player that year than this. He was significant in the Super Bowl on both special teams and as a wide receiver.

Five years ago, the Chiefs defeated the 49ers 31-20. Kansas City was so successful because of its elite quarterback-wide receiver connection. Patrick Mahomes loved connecting with speedster Tyreek Hill.

In 2022, the Rams defeated the Bengals 23-20. The Rams had the cornerback play to limit Cincinnati’s extremely talented pass attack. The Rams also had the best wide receiver on offense and their defense had it relatively easy thanks to the pass-rushing prowess of Aaron Donald, who easily disturbs opposing quarterbacks.

In 2021, the Buccaneers shut down the Chiefs 31-9. The Bucs did not allow Mahomes to work his usual magic. They had, earlier in that season, developed a growing comfort with a coverage scheme that Mahomes was uncomfortable with.

Preseason Odds on Last 7 Super Bowl Winners

  • 2023: Kansas City Chiefs +600
  • 2022: Kansas City Chiefs +800
  • 2021: Los Angeles Rams +1400
  • 2020: Tampa Bay Buccaneers +1000
  • 2019: Kansas City Chiefs +600
  • 2018: New England Patriots +600
  • 2017: Philadelphia Eagles +4000

Needless to say, the oddsmakers have their pulse on the heartbeat of the NFL as the only long shot over the past seven seasons came in 2017 when the Philadelphia Eagles (+4000) upset the New England Patriots.

Super Bowl LVIII Recap

The start of Super Bowl 58 was profoundly representative of the Chiefs’ problems in that entire season and of the ways in which they could surmount those problems.

To be specific, their offense looked almost completely hapless. Indeed, their offense struggled throughout the year because their wide receiver crew did such a poor job of running routes, finding open spaces when Patrick Mahomes was on the run, and of securing catches. However, their defense was very good that year. So, they held the 49ers’ extremely well-balanced and talented offense to ten first-half points, and it was still a close game.

In the second half, things shifted. While Kansas City running back Isiah Pacheco lost a critical fumble in the first half, the 49ers lost a critical fumble in the second half. More importantly, Patrick Mahomes played better, like the future Hall-of-Famer that he is. After the first half, he accumulated 210 passing yards and 59 rushing yards.

The game was tight in the second half. The Chiefs were going to need one more tremendous mistake from the 49ers to avoid losing in regulation. When the 49ers scored a touchdown to go up 16-13, they missed the extra point. For the rest of the regulation, the teams exchanged field goals, and the game was 19-19 heading into overtime.

In overtime, Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes threw the touchdown that won his team the Super Bowl.

Underdog Showdown

The Chiefs were 1.5-point underdogs, so they covered the spread in overtime. Likewise, the over/under was 46.5, and the “over” hit in overtime.

Kansas City benefited from mistakes, but it would be absurd to fault a team for making fewer mistakes. The Chiefs earned their Super Bowl victory and they had to survive a hard path to the Super Bowl. Sure, nobody expected them to lose, at home in the freezing weather, to Miami, but beating Buffalo on the road and Baltimore on the road is impressive.

The Ravens were posted at +2000 to win the Super Bowl, but they turned out to be a very strong team with an elite quarterback and a top-notch defense. Buffalo was posted at +900 to win the Super Bowl, reflecting the extent of their talent on both sides of the ball. The Eagles were at +800 to win the Super Bowl but they couldn’t make it out of a very good NFC.

Biggest Super Bowl Upsets

The Giants were 12-point underdogs in 2007 when they defeated the then-undefeated Patriots, who were trying to make history by completing a perfect season. The Giants won 17-14 in a thriller.

Biggest Super Bowl Payouts

Mattress Mack doesn’t just bet on his beloved Houston Astros. He won 3.46 million dollars when he bet, in 2021, on the Bucs to beat the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

How to Bet on Super Bowl LIX

You should visit the website of a sportsbook known to be reliable and register. You’ll give some personal information to make an account, which is easy to do.

Make your deposit, and then get to know the sportsbook’s betting menu. Ideally, you should register at multiple sportsbooks so that you can take the fullest advantage of the betting options that are out there and get the best odds.

Select your bet and then type in the amount you wish to risk.

Betting Approach

I believe in risking the same amount for every bet.

Risking more on a given bet implies that you are more confident in that bet hitting, but you should be confident in every bet that you place. Since you are not omniscient and since things happen – like bad calls from a referee – you are not epistemically justified in risking more on any given game.

Risking the same amount on every game is, therefore, the logical thing to do. Doing so also prevents you from having to win multiple consecutive bets just in order to make up for a single loss. You don’t want to do things that will increase your chances of being in a hole.

Bet within your limits

In my mind, the only reason why you’d bet more on a game is because you like the rush. I don’t like to feel nervous, because I’m not having fun, but maybe that rush is your sort of idea of having fun.

If this is the case for you, then so be it. But I strongly urge you to always bet within your means. If you do want to risk more on certain games, such as the Super Bowl, make sure that you devote the effort to creating a budget so that you are never risking anything that you can’t afford to lose.

Betting is supposed to be fun and entertaining. However you want to do it is ultimately your choice – I can only give my personal advice which is rooted somewhat in my personal feelings, and I just don’t like increasing my risks. It is ultimately fine if you want to risk more on certain games, but let me just emphasize again to stay responsible by creating a careful budget so that your losses will feel like part of the entertainment instead of like a devastating blow.

How to Read Super Bowl LIX Betting Lines and Odds

  • Moneylines: the team that wins a game.

Example: Giants money-line at -110. You are betting on them at this price to win.

  • Point Spreads: the team that covers the spread.

If the Giants are -3.5, then you are betting on them to win by more than 3.5 points. You are, essentially, subtracting 3.5 points from their real-life point total and then determining if they won.

  • Totals: the amount of points scored.

The Chiefs-49ers over/under was listed at -46.5 points. For the under to hit, both teams have to have combined for fewer than 46.5 points.

  • Prop Bets: all sorts of wagers related to the game or to different players.

For example, Josh Allen over/under 310 passing yards.

  • Quarter and Halftime Bets: money-line, spread, and total for a quarter or a half.

For example, Patriots’ first-half money-line at -110. You are betting on them to win the first half.

  • Parlays: multiple wagers; if one of them loses, then the entire parlay loses. If they all hit, then you get a payout that exceeds the amount that you would have won by placing straight wagers.

For example, you may parlay Jaguars -3 and over 46. You are betting on the Jaguars to win by more than 3 points and on the over 46 to hit.

Live Betting

Compared to what they were before a game, the odds will change depending on what happens in a game. This is a great way to find value in a team that you liked before a game. Maybe that team falls behind early and then you can bet on that team at nicer odds – at, for example, +10 instead of the pre-game +7. Likewise, maybe you see that one team is clearly superior, so you’d want to bet on it as soon as it goes ahead.
