According to our AI model, the Angels are projected to lose 5-4 against the Twins despite being home. However, that result would still give the Angels the win on the run line at +1.5 (-170). After looking over this game, the Angels still look like the play on the run line.
Bailey Ober’s Struggles
Minnesota’s Bailey Ober pitched fairly well last season. Some thought he might even break out this season with the Twins.
Instead, he’s been way worse. To begin the season, Ober has allowed a .243 ISO and wOBA of .327 and has induced under 30% of ground balls. He’s also been much worse against righties, allowing a .257 ISO and wOBA of .364.
That’s not ideal, knowing the Angels will have more righties than lefties in the lineup tonight. Since last season, the Angels’ righties have combined to hit a .188 ISO and wOBA of .329 against righties, including power slugger Mike Trout.
Don’t Fade Patrick Sandoval
On the other hand, Patrick Sandoval hasn’t been very good, either. He’s got a 6.75 ERA to begin the season with the Angels. However, that’s ultimately due to his high walk rate. It never used to be this high and will likely slow down against a Twins lineup that has walked only 7.8% of the time since last season against lefties.
Sandoval has held teams to a .115 ISO and nearly 47% of ground balls. These aren’t horrible numbers.
The Pick
Both pitchers should see some regression. That favors Sandoval and the Angels. I’m with the AI Model and believe the Angels win against the run line.
