2024 U.S. Open Championship

June 10 – 16, 2024 at Pinehurst Resort

Cliff Notes

Pinehurst No. 2 was designed back in 1907 by esteemed Donald Ross, renovated by Robert Trent Jones in 1974, and once again by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2010.

With yardage close to 7600 yards, the course is one of the longest par-70s. Pinehurst has held three previous renewals since 1999 when the late Payne Stewart was the champion, 2005 saw New Zealander Michael Campbell hold off Tiger Woods and in 2014, Kaymer won by eight strokes.

Hitting the Bermuda grass greens in regulation, and with light rain showers forecast on all four days, perhaps the greens will be receiving the ball better than many previous U.S. Opens when dry conditions only added to the penal nature of the USGA setup.

Who Are the Best Props Bets?

When looking for props bets at value prices for this week’s U.S. Open, we have dug down into players’ amateur and professional records at Pinehurst No. 2 for indicators of affinity with the North Carolina track.

Researching this week’s U.S. Open has been fun and several names leap off the page with their amateur or junior form at Pinehurst No. 2:

  • Irish youngster Tom McKibbin is traveling across the Atlantic, and he won a Junior title at Pinehurst nearly a decade ago at the age of twelve.
  • Brandon Wu, who scored well here in the U.S. Amateur and whose ball-striking figures over recent weeks have been better than results, while he also performed well in the 2019 Open when finishing 35th.

Can Kaymer recapture former glories?

The first player who jumped off the page in the U.S. Open research was the 2014 champion Martin Kaymer, who is having a revival on the LIV Tour in recent events and last week was the first-round leader at LIV Houston.

The thirty-nine-year-old German has been battling injury for the last three seasons and also showed a glimpse of his improved form at the recent PGA Championship. Returning to the scene of his second major championship win is bound to be another huge positive for Kaymer.

There was a pivotal point of change for Kaymer’s career, and it came at the beginning of 2015, when leading the Abu Dhabi Championship by 9 shots with nine holes to play, only to fall apart, meaning that 2014 U.S. Open was his last win.

After so many years in the golfing wilderness, it would be a huge leap of faith to believe he can win again at Pinehurst No. 2. However, he has the potential to be huge value in the props markets.

In recent weeks, Martin Kaymer has shown the propensity to start tournaments with low rounds.

We are backing the German at OddsTrader’s top-rated sportsbooks to be First Round Leader at the U.S. Open along with a top 40 finish.

Are Amateur Days Pointing to Nick Dunlap?

We believe you should perhaps search some props markets for our mentions, but for official bets, it will be Nick Dunlap.

The twenty-year-old from Huntsville Alabama has been a revelation in 2024, winning the American Express as an amateur at (+100000). Immediately after, Dunlap turned pro, and despite a few bumps in the road, he has performed creditably with 11th at the Texas Houston being his best effort since.

Recent weeks have seen palpable improvement in Dunlap’s stats, particularly last week at the Memorial and Wells Fargo before that, incidentally both championship courses like Pinehurst.

The icing on the cake to bet Nick Dunlap here is his course win last year in the North and South Amateur. Like Kaymer, winning could be a leap of faith too big, but like the German, he has been starting events very fast.

Therefore, we suggest betting on Nick Dunlap to be the first-round leader and top-10 finish this week.
